As part of the Queensland Government's Student Wellbeing Package, our College was selected to participate in the GPs in Schools Pilot Program. The purpose of this state wide initiative is to provide secondary college students who may otherwise face barriers to receiving timely and appropriate healthcare with free and confidential access to a GP at school. Providing this service will have a positive impact on students' health and wellbeing and their readiness and ability to engage at school.

Our clinic will be open from 9.00am to 3.00pm every Wednesday during school terms and will be staffed by Dr Megan Arlett and Nurses Kerri and Anthea from Townsville & Suburban Medical Practice. Providing all Heatley Secondary College students with the majority of the same services that GPs in the community do, our College is fortunate to have Dr Arlett and the clinic nurses join our school community and offer healthcare support for any physical and mental health issues that students may be experiencing. For further information, please refer to the factsheets.

Profiles

Dr Megan Arlett is a Townsville local, and went through high school at Pimlico before attending James Cook University. This was followed by 2 years of hospital medicine at the Townsville Hospital and Charters Towers Hospital. Dr Megan has been in general practice for 5 years so far, and loving the long-term care and opportunities to help people with their health early on in the process. She is particularly interested in sexual health and contraception, pregnancy care, and the health of young people, but consults on all types of health problems across all ages. She is very excited to be joining the GPs in Schools program with Heatley Secondary College and is hoping to make our clinic a useful and welcoming part of the school. Dr Arlett welcomes all feedback on any suggestions that could improve services offered at the clinic. Emails can be directed to qi@tsmp.net or students can drop in to the GP clinic at C Block on Wednesdays during school hours.

Nurse Anthea (aka Ant) moved to Townsville in 1979 from Western Queensland. Ant grew up on a farm at Black River and is an ex Heatley High Alumni, graduating back in 1993. She is a classified EN (Enrolled Nurse) and although she has only been nursing for a short time, she hopes she has made a difference in people's lives during this time. Ant enjoys making a connection with people and helping them on their wellness journey and hopes to make the students at HSC feel welcome and heard when attending the GP clinic. She confesses to being a huge geek/nerd and believes this may help break the ice when students attend appointments.
