At Heatley Secondary College we have the highest expectations for behaviour and effort. Our staff care greatly for our students and spend time teaching what it means to be the kind of learner who will be successful. Our focus is achievement, wellbeing and engagement, and culture and inclusion for students as they transition through each stage of learning. Creating a safe, supportive and inclusive learning environment strengthening relationships that maximises learning and outcome for all students is a key priority.

Learning and wellbeing are inextricably linked. The importance of supporting students' wellbeing and mental health is well established. Resilient and confident students not only perform better academically but are more likely to develop and maintain healthy, positive relationships and make responsible lifestyle choices.

In order to support students through the education process, we have adopted a whole school approach which shapes and supports appropriate behaviour in all students both in and out of the classroom setting.

Universal classroom support

Effective classroom management is the consistent implementation of proactive, research-informed practices using an instructional approach to teach the behaviours needed for success at school and beyond. Effective classroom management recognises that the development of positive relationships with students is at the centre of all classroom management along with reinforcement of regulation strategies and problem solving methods explicitly taught through the RIOT (Resilience in Our Teens) Program, restorative principles, classroom organisation, differentiated teaching and learning, behavioural expectations, explicit teaching of social skills, positive reinforcement, active engagement, active supervision and, consistent and fair consequences (Positive behaviour for learning in the classroom).

We value learning, embrace diversity and are committed to active citizenship. We nurture Heatley Proud Learners to be:

  • Aspirational
  • Inclusive
  • Responsible
  • Respectful
  • Resilient
